In our previous Symposia events we identified the shortcomings and the barriers facing Malaysian Higher Education, and the Higher Education Blueprint more specifically. So we met again to discuss how we could over come this, and how we might develop an alternative vision for higher education that will provide an important counter-point to the national debate.
We engaged in a large group discussion and discussed a variety of solutions to problems facing Higher Education in Malaysia, both the short term problems highlighted by the Blueprint and the longer term problems of the role of academia and universities in modern, globalized and capitalist states.
Key Questions we considered were:
What is the role of the university?
What is the role of the academic?
What do these concepts mean to you?
What do we have to do to get there?
and How do we respond to the 10 points in the Higher Education Blueprint?
